Review: LG G Watch R Advantages & Disadvantages

The Motorola Moto 360 was hotly anticipated as the first circular Android Wear device, but its screen isn't actually a full circle. The display on the LG G Watch R however, is. The LG G Watch R, which, despite having too many individually separate letters in a single product name, is undeniably a massive improvement over the original G Watch.

The G Watch R finally sees the fusion between the new wave of SmartWatches and the tried and tested design of traditional wristwatches. As with all the Android Wear devices the LG G Watch R will work with any Android handset running Android 4.3 or above - and there's even rumors suggesting Google may open up compatibility to iOS devices too, so watch this space.

The new G Watch R fuses real leather, angular black metal and a host of beautiful round -- yes, round -- watch faces into a SmartWatch that's difficult to tell apart from a regular watch. Even the most dedicated fashion fiends might struggle to dislike this one. The home button on the side cleverly looks like a crown.

The processor under is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC with 512MB of RAM. You'll be able to run every Android Wear app out on the market today - unless they're tailored for square faces only, of course. You'll have wrist-bound access to your smartphone notifications, time and weather, and turn-by-turn directions as well.

The G Watch R's full circle display means you get a full 360 degrees of information, watch faces or whatever content you might be dealing with, and for the most part Android Wear adapts reasonably well to this form factor. At the top-level watch face view, notifications text is shortened way more than it would be on a square SmartWatch, on account of less space being available further down. And text still has to flow in a rectangular grid, so messages appear in a squarish box within the round porthole of the G Watch R.

LG’s G Watch R boasts the usual suite of sensors, but it also has an optical heart rate monitor, something the original G Watch lacked. One thing it’s missing that Android Wear supports is GPS, however, which is something that most OEMs have left out of their sensor package so far. Including it would’ve made the G Watch R much more useful for navigation without a connected phone, and it’s a more obvious omission when you consider that the G Watch R is the most expensive Android Wear device available.

The G Watch R's charging solution isn't quite as elegant as the Moto 360's Qi wireless setup, but it works pretty well. The device slots onto a hockey-puck-looking charging dock, which connects over microUSB. As with other Android Wear watches, charging times over USB are pretty darn fast.

LG G Watch R vs Samsung Gear A

Like many others i don't like reading long review articles because those kind of things only confuses the audiences. That's why i always prefer to write my review articles in a way where you only need to look at two/three things. I am going to mention the key features of LG G Watch R , its advantages and disadvantages like my previous Samsung Gear Fit and Motorola Moto 360 review.

LG G Watch R Key Features-
  • 1.3-inch circular OLED display, 320 x 320 pixels, 246ppi, 33mm screen diameter
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz processor
  • 4GB storage (3 GB user available), 512MB RAM
  • IP67 water/dust resistance, water-resistant for 30 minutes up to depth of 1 meter
  • Heart rate sensor, gyro, accelerometer, compass
  • Comes with a barometric altimeter for quick elevation checks

LG G Watch R Advantages-
  • Full circle display is gorgeous
  • Bright, clear round display
  • Durable construction
  • Actually looks like a watch
  • Acceptable performance

LG G Watch R Disadvantages-
  • Two day battery life
  • Only charges with dock
  • Leather wristband feels like a cardboard strap.
  • Smaller screen makes reading messages more difficult
  • No choice for casing colors
  • Expensive & Big

The G Watch R is the first SmartWatch to feature a completely rounded display. And it's a great looking one at that. Although its stark design and beautiful face makes this the first SmartWatch you might actually be happy to be seen wearing, its Android Wear software has a long way to go before it's anything more than a passing novelty. We would also have liked to see an even longer battery life out of a SmartWatch and perhaps having a thicker battery would be a nice solution.
