Jerry Shen, CEO at Asus, was recently quoted by NDTV (India) claiming that his company will not launch a successor to the original Asus ZenWatch in 2015, and that the new SmartWatch won't reach the market until next year at an unspecified date. The SmartWatch, tipped to be called the Asus ZenWatch 2, is also said to arrive in two variants, one for men and the other for women. It is, however, not yet known whether the devices will have different designs or just different straps for customization.
Not a lot is known about the ZenWatch 2's specs, but Asus has revealed its intentions to add SIM support for the SmartWatch to give it independence from smartphones. Like Samsung's Gear S, the SIM support would allow wearers to leave their phones at home and still field calls. Shen also outlined a focus on improving battery life, something that he’s mentioned a need to improve before. Right now, Android Wear devices like the ZenWatch as well as the G Watch R all use processors designed for smartphones, so newer chips should be designed for lower-power situations like a wearable device such as a SmartWatch.

Asus is no stranger to the Android world, starting out with the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer back in the day, but the wearables market was something of a mystery to them. After testing the waters with the original ZenWatch, ASUS are said to have a better understanding of the market, and the ZenWatch 2 will presumably be a product that ASUS is more willing to spend time and money promoting. If the ZenWatch 2 is to launch next year, it looks like we have quite the wait ahead of us.
