Review: Xiaomi Mi Band Advantages & Disadvantages

For the last four years China's Xiaomi is gaining in gradually global market share for smartphones, and it's not stopping there. Like so many of its rivals, it's also breaking into wearables, with its debut device being the Mi Band fitness tracker. The official price in China translates to $13 in the U.S. which, however you choose to look at it, is an insanely low price for a device in this category.

Though the Mi Band fitness tracker device is available for so cheap, it offers a few meaningful features, which can really leave you impressed. Just like most fitness bands in the market, the Mi Band is cute, light and utilitarian. At an incredibly weight of 13g you barely notice the Mi Band on your arm, and with eight adjustment holes it'll fit any wrist from 157- to 205mm. It's also hypoallergenic, so even those with the most sensitive skin will be able to use the Mi Band.

what can Xiaomi Mi Band actually do?

The sensors on the Mi Band are fairly accurate when it comes to counting steps and calories burnt. Though there were occasions when it couldn't track the steps and when it counted steps even though we were not moving. The technology is still new and none of these bands are completely accurate.

Xiaomi says the Mi Band has been subjected to temperatures between -20ºC and 70ºC, drop-tested from 1.2m and corrosion-tested for cosmetic resistance. Faced with the Move's splashproof design Xiaomi brings to the table full waterproofing to 1m with IP67 certification, so you could wear this fitness band in the bath or shower, and clean the band following a workout.

Xiaomi is promising battery life of 30 days. That’s a far cry from the Fitbit’s four-day charge and the Jawbone’s 10. When it is running low, a few minutes on the charger is all you need for several more days of power.

Xiaomi Mi Band Key Features-
  • Measures your steps and sleep patterns
  • 30 day battery life
  • IP67 water and dust resistant
  • Compatible with iOS 7+, Android 4.4+, Mi 3, Redmi Note 4G

how accurate Xiaomi Mi Band is in sleep tracking?

Xiaomi Mi Band Advantages-
  • Ridiculously cheap
  • Easy setup, simple app UI
  • Mi Fit app is easy to use and comes with a lot of handy features
  • Sleep mode is automatically triggered
  • Feature set on par with high-dollar competitors
  • Excellent battery life

Xiaomi Mi Band Disadvantages-
  • Limited options for notifications and alerts
  • The gesture motion to light up the Mi Band's indicator lights can be hard
  • No Android 4.3 support
  • You have to register with Xiaomi using a mobile number before start using
  • Doesn't do much beyond tracking your sleep and counting your steps

On the whole, anyone would recommend you the Mi Band as a great entry-level wearable for those that don’t want to make a big monetary commitment into their first fitness tracker. It could also be an excellent gift for any Android-wielding friends and family, even the less tech-savvy ones. It doesn't do anything new, but it doesn't lack any major features of its pricier competitors, either. At just US$13, it could easily steal away the majority of first-time buyers and those looking to upgrade from their old school pedometers.
